Seed Balls
Introduction:
Developing (hope so!) countries like INDIA, lots of real estate’s concrete business are mounting every day. These buildings may provide spaces/assets for industries like manufacturing, software firms and residential apartments/house/villas to people. Are these concrete walls enough to live in a pollution-free environment? Absolutely not! Then how can we control pollution?
Yes, mainly by trees. Trees are playing a vital role to control air pollution and rotation of Oxygen and Carbon dioxide and vice-versa. Can everyone do, planting trees? If you ask people, they may come up with a list of constraints which stops or not allowing them to plant and grow a tree. If this is the case then how can we make our environment pollution free and make sure rain for every year on particular time without fail.
Trees are removed mainly for so-called improvements like developing cities and expanding roads. These residential buildings are required to accommodate and provide a shelter to the growing populations of cities, however, do we really have enough space in our cities? Absolutely not; thus to make the space available either we wipe out forests or converting agricultural lands into residential areas.
By the name of widening or expanding roads to handle traffics inside the city, trees reside in the roadsides are getting removed. Due to this, pollutions also increasing day by day in our cities.
Even though we know, trees which inhale the carbon dioxide and emits oxygen are important to keep the pollutions under control, still, we go ahead and remove/cut the trees without any further re-planning or planting trees or without any alternative to prevent the air pollutions. Emission of carbon dioxide also leads to sea acidifications, which in turn affects the life of mammals’ lives in the sea.
To keep the air clean which helps to maintain our generations as well as, the future generation’s health in good condition, we have to plant trees. But it may not possible for everyone to plant the trees near their house or commonplace. To overcome this situation, there is a method called “Seedballs”.
What is Seed balls?

Seed balls are made with seeds and manure. Seeds are kept inside the mixture of soil (probably red soil/vandal soil) and cow dungs and made in round ball shapes. These balls are kept too dry for 3-5 hours and packed in a gunny bags to avoid cracks due to direct exposure to sunlight.
Seeds of various trees such as medicines (Neem), fruit trees (Tamarind, Jack fruit, Banyan etc.), flowers and trees which will grow big and provide the shadows are made with this balls.
How to use:
Once these balls are ready, they can be planted in any place like gardens, roadside, public places. During the monsoon, the seeds inside these balls will grow naturally and make our city more greenery. A Little bit of water or small rain may help these seeds to grow.
It’s not necessary for a person to have his own free space to plant these seed balls, he/she can throw even in any empty land/ free space/park where he/she don’t have any ownership, thus it will help in Guerilla planting as well.
These balls can be made by individuals at their home as well. Various organizations and NGOs which are contributing to making these seed balls. Anybody in any age can participate to make these balls and plant them in any areas to make our environment green.
For more information, you can approach any nurseries available near your place or NGOs.Let us work together to make our earth pollution free and make it livable place, not only for human beings but, also for other mammals too. Keep Green and Go GreenJ.
